Materials I Use
I get a lot of questions about the art materials I use, so I created this page to share what I use so you all can paint along with me :)
I was able to create this page for you all with the help of Blick Art Materials. Clicking on these links helps me tremendously as I can earn a small commission from them. Best of all, it doesn't cost you anything and helps me deliver quality content for you to watch, enjoy and learn!
Canvases
Canvas Panels
These are the canvas panels that I recommend. My go-to sizes are 11x14, 12"x16", 14"x18", 16"x20", 18"x24", and 20"x24" (inches x inches).
Stretched Canvases
These are the canvases that I recommend. I use larger sizes for stretched canvases such as 24"x30", 24"x36", 30"x40", 36"x48", and occasionally 15"x30"
Brushes
Blick Natural Bristle Brush - Mega Filbert, Short Handle, Size 50
This is my main background brush. I start most of my larger paintings with this brush, utilizing its size to quickly fill the initial background.
Simply Simmons XL Stiff Synthetic Brush - Size 70
I use this as my main blending brush. Its large size makes blending the skies a very efficient process.
Grumbacher Goldenedge Synthetic Sable Brushes
I use the Grumbacher Size 12 brush for background details. Being a midsized brush, it works great for smaller, more detailed parts of the background.
Oil Paints
Winsor & Newton Artists’ Oil Colours
I use these oil paints for all of my paintings. They are reliable and of high quality. The colors I use the most are Titanium White, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow, Permanent Green, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine, and Violet.
Gamblin Artist’s Oil Paints
I use these oil paints for all of my paintings. They are reliable and of high quality. The colors I use the most are Titanium White, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow, Permanent Green, Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine, and Violet.
Oils and Thinners
Winsor & Newton Refined Linseed Oil
Refined linseed oil is the one of the main mediums I use to thin my oil paints.
Winsor & Newton Distilled Turpentine
Turpentine is one of the mediums I use to thin my oil paints.
Weber Odorless Turpenoid
Because Turpentine can have a toxic odor in large amounts, Turpenoid is a great altnerative when larger amounts are needed to thin oil paints. I always use Turpentine in addition to other thinners to decrease its concentration and odor.
Winsor & Newton Dammar Varnish
Dammar varnish is great for adding some shine and thinning oil paints when mixed with turpentine (or turpenoid) and linseed oil. Working to the benefit of alla prima style painting, dammar varnish also helps the different layers of oil paints dry faster for more efficient painting.
